Paws, Whiskers & Wiggly Tails

Why I love pets in your session

If you've ever wrinkled your nose as your puppy enthusiastically “kisses” your ear (or mouth!) or laughed through a shot because your cat decided to stubbornly sit right on your toddlers lap seeking the purrrfect pat, you’re in good company here.

One of the things I’ve grown to love most about photographing families is when they show up as their whole, wonderful, slightly-chaotic selves - pets and all. Those unfiltered moments, complete with wagging tails and unexpected licks, are often the ones that stay with you the longest.

Pets are Family

They’re not just ‘extras’ in the family dynamic - they’re fully-fledged characters in your household story. Whether your pup is your toddler’s best mate, your cat is the unofficial ruler of the home, or your rescue greyhound has become the gentlest shadow at your feet… they matter.

So, when I say your pets are welcome, I don’t mean in the “I’ll tolerate them if I have to” kind of way. I mean: Bring them. Let them jump in the frame (or me). Let them sit on your lap. Let them be part of this little time capsule we’re creating.

Why Pets Make Photos Better

There is just something about a child wrapping their arms around their dog, or when a couple snuggles on the couch with their old girl. There’s also humour, unpredictability, and most of all, authenticity.

Pets invite play.

They diffuse nerves.

They bring out real smiles.

And in ten years’ time, when your little one is no longer little, you’ll be so glad to have that photo of them and their furry best friend.

Capturing the Love (and the Licks)

After years of photographing families, including my own, across Melbourne’s inner and southeast suburbs, I’ve learned a few things: kids don’t stay still, dogs will always find the mud, and the best shots are rarely posed. I’ve also become pretty skilled at catching that half-second where everyone’s looking, the dog’s not running off, and there’s genuine laughter in the air.

I don’t mind if your golden retriever is overly enthusiastic, or if your labradoodle insists on kissing my camera lens. I’ve had pointers try to steal the show and one unforgettable cat who simply sat on the toddlers lap refusing to move for half the session (and yes, we rolled with it).

How to Make It Work (Even If You Think It Won’t)

Worried your pet won’t sit still? No problem - I rarely ask anyone to stay still for long anyway. But a few things do help:

  • Let me know ahead of time, so I can suggest a pet-friendly location (if not at home)
  • Bring treats, a favourite toy, or something that makes them feel at ease.
  • Leads are totally fine (I can edit them out where needed).
  • A spare pair of hands (another grown-up or older child) can be useful, especially if we want a few non-pet photos too.

We’ll keep things relaxed, go with the flow, and capture the magic in whatever way it shows up.

Let’s Tell the Whole Story

If you’re reading this and thinking, “But our dog is wild…” or “Our cat would never cooperate…” - that’s okay.

Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Real life isn’t perfect. But it’s full of love, and fur, and noise, and moments that pass far too quickly. So, let’s tell your family’s story - all of it… with everyone. Whiskers, wagging tails, muddy paws… and all the love in between.
