Life isn't always picture-perfect
Watching my two children explore the world with their full-body enthusiasm has become my favourite pastime. One minute they’re tiny, the next they’ve shot up overnight (I swear my son grew 3cm while I blinked). Everything changes so quickly. Having photos of the real, everyday moments gives me a way to slow it down and come back to it later, right in the middle of the chaos.
And honestly, I think that’s why family photos matter.
It’s easy to feel like life has to look a certain way to be worth documenting, especially online. But the moments that end up meaning the most are rarely the polished ones. They’re the unscripted bits, the way your child reaches for your hand without thinking, the belly laughs, the cuddles, the movement, the mess that somehow feels like home.
My goal as a Melbourne family photographer is to capture your family in a way that feels true to you, not stiff, not overly posed, and not like you’re performing for the camera.
If you’re thinking, “Sounds lovely, but I get awkward as soon as I know a camera’s there… what do I do with my hands?”, you’re not alone. Most people feel that way. That’s why my sessions are relaxed and gently guided. I’ll give you simple prompts and just enough direction to help you feel comfortable and confident, then I’ll let things unfold naturally while you simply be with your people.
Here's why I think you should embrace this style of photography:
You get the real deal
It captures the real, unfiltered emotions of your family. From the pure joy when your little one works out the water pump at the local playground on a sunny afternoon or the infectious laughter as they swing through the air in a blanket held by their parents, candid photos reveal the true essence of your family's connection.
You get access to a time machine
Years from now, when you look back at your images, you'll be transported to that specific time and place. You'll remember the little details – the way your toddler's tiny, sand gritted hand gripped your finger, the moment your partner brushed a stray hair from your face and the laughter of when your feet were all tangled together having fallen in a tickle induced heap.
You will have more fun
Formal posed photography sessions can sometimes be stressful for young children with boundless energy. Kids love to play, explore, and move. They don’t find sitting still, smiling, and looking at the camera fun. Come to think of it, I don’t know many adults who would either! Candid photography, on the other hand, takes the pressure off. You and your family can relax, be yourselves, and enjoy the moment.
My job is to make you feel as comfortable as possible.
In sessions I use a few simple prompts to create natural interactions and emotions. By giving gentle directions that encourage movement and connection, I help create an environment where genuine moments unfold. These prompts aren’t about forcing a certain pose but rather about guiding you into actions that feel natural and reflect your unique dynamic.
For example, I might ask you to hold hands and walk slowly toward me, share a funny story, or whisper a silly word to your child. These simple prompts often lead to genuine smiles, warm embraces, and those candid moments that make for beautiful photos.
I believe that the best photos happen when you’re comfortable and having fun, and I’m here to guide you through the process with gentle prompts and a lot of encouragement.
If you’re ready to book a session or have any questions about how I work, feel free to reach out. I can’t wait to capture your family’s unique story!
