Celebrating the Real

In-Home photoshoot preparation for families in every home

I get it - in world where family homes on social media often appear to be straight from a showroom catalog, it's easy to feel that your home isn't photoshoot ready.

However, I have a different angle that I want to share with you. My role as a family photographer is to capture the essence of your family in the here and now - just as you are. Whether your home is cozy and filled with mementos and bursting bookshelves or a bustling hub of daily activity with crumbs from breakfast on the kitchen bench, every space holds meaning and memories, making it perfect for a beautiful in-home family session.

With a few thoughtful tips I want you to feel confident that your home is the perfect backdrop to capture the moments that meant the most for your family. Embrace the imperfections and find joy in styling a setting that reflects your story, creating images that will help you remember this season of your life.

Family life is always changing, and your photos should capture the story of who you are right now and what matters most to you - whether it’s a toddler’s favorite toy, a child’s latest artwork, or a teen’s musical passion. These shared moments make your photos feel genuine and personal.

Preparation

Embrace your unique style

We're not here to replicate a spread from House and Garden magazine. Instead, embrace what makes your space uniquely yours by identifying areas that your family love to use.  A cozy reading nook filled with favorite books (ripped pages and all), the themed nursery that you spent hours dreaming up or the basketball ring in the backyard.

Embrace imperfections - a slightly rumpled bed or a toy cars precariously scattered across the floor  add realism to your images, making them more meaningful in years to come.

Let there be light

Natural light creates a soft, flattering glow for your family and home. Prior to the session, try to identify the rooms in your house with the best natural light - think big windows.

We'll schedule your shoot around the time of day when these areas are brightest, typically mid-morning or late afternoon.

Don't be afraid to move furniture to take advantage of the best light. A couch pulled closer to a window or a reading nook set up near a bright corner can create the perfect setting for your photos.

Consider what moments you want to capture

The magic of in-home photography lies in capturing the everyday moments as these are what make the memories you'll cherish in years to come.

We'll focus on activities that are part of your regular routine - a story on the couch, a weekend breakfast favorite (pancakes anyone?) or impromptu living room dance parties. We won't overlook the quiet moments either - a parent helping with homework or a drawing, siblings sharing a laugh, or a toddler's intense concentration (tongue out) during playtime.

I'll be here to guide you, but don't hesitate to suggest  suggest activities that feel like you.

Your home is already perfect for capturing your family's memories. Let's explore how to make the most of your unique space and everyday moments.

Styling for Any Space

Declutter and Simplify

Remove any items that might distract from your family in the photos. This includes things like phone chargers, mail, paperwork, laundry baskets, remote controls, and brightly colored plastic toys.

Aim for clear surfaces on bedside tables and coffee tables—perhaps leave a lamp, a small stack of books, or a vase of flowers for a touch of warmth.

Make your bed

Beds and sofas are popular spots for family photos. Take a few minutes to make the beds neatly and plump the pillows.

Layering with throws or cushions in soft, neutral colors can add visual interest and a cozy feel.

If possible, avoid bold or neon bedding, as these colors can reflect onto faces and distract from the main subjects. Light, neutral bedding works best to keep the focus on your family

You don't need a picture-perfect home to create beautiful family photos. With a few simple styling tips, you can make any space photo-ready.

I'm here to help

Cherished family photos capture real, unscripted moments that truly reflect your connection.

When I arrive, I’ll take time to get to know you and your space, looking for those little details and interactions that tell your story. I’ll gently guide you when needed, but I also encourage you to relax, be yourselves, and even suggest activities that feel natural to your family.

During your session, I’ll encourage playful interactions, tell jokes, and even use a few silly tricks to spark genuine smiles and laughter. I love letting kids be themselves, as some of the best photos come from their natural curiosity and playfulness.

My hope is that, together, we’ll create photos that feel honest, warm, and truly yours - memories you’ll love looking back on for years to come.
